Controls:Let's talk about what's new here. Reload is now placed with the right bumper, rather than X, and when duel wielding- right bumper reloads your right hand weapon, and the left bumper reloads your left hand weapon. This gives you greater control over your weaponry and allows you to perform tactical reloads. The X button is now the deploy gadget button. The right bumper is used to (press and hold) to pick up weapons, get in vehicles, or hi-jack a vehicle- replacing the X button. The left bumper will cycle through the grenade types. All this may seem odd at first as you'll probably be used to reloading with the X button and such like, however it quickly becomes familiar to you. As in the previous two Halo games, a great deal of thought has gone in to the controls and they work just perfectly.
Other new features:
There are a few new features in the Halo 3 beta which I will now go through. These features are really awesome.
Veto:
Essentially a voting system whereby players who decide they are unhappy with the chosen map or game type can press the X button to use Veto and, with a majority vote, a new game will be selected at random. For example if 5 or more players (out of 8) decide to veto a game of Team Shotty Snipers on High Ground, the game could then be changed to Team Slayer on Snowbound. Democracy!
Party Up:
At the end of a game (providing your party isn't already full) the party-up feature will enable you the option of partying up with the players who were just on your team. For example say you have 3 players already in your party for Team Slayer (maximum party size of 4.) At the end of the game you can offer to party-up. If then another player also does the same, he/she will join your party.
Saved films and file sharing:
Oh this is a truly great feature this is. After a game, you can now save the whole game and watch it back later. Say you get 20 kills on Team Slayer and are particularly pleased with it, like I was, you can go to view stats at the end the game and then press X to save the film. You can then go to theatre mode and watch the game back whenever you want. In the beta options are severely limited, however in the full version there will be options to cut out a particular moment in a match, slow down time, view the game from an other players' perspective and maybe more. Another great feature is the file sharing. You can upload a selection of your favourite films (with a 25MB limit in the beta) which other players can then watch themselves. You can even recommend a film to a friend and attempt to try and lure him to watching a clip of you head-shoting him from across the map.
So, in conclusion, what needs work? (If anything!)
Well- not a lot actually. There are a couple of things I will mention that perhaps could do with a little tweaking, but these are really small things. Bungie seem to have the game's multiplayer down so perfectly, there's not much I can really complain about!
The Needler:
Could do with being made to look a tad more bulky, as you can't duel wield anymore. It makes sense that you can't duel wield the Needler due to it's improved power, however going by size- couldn't a Spartan manage to pick up two of these relatively small weapons?
Talk Button:
Just like in Halo 2, there's a talk button in Halo 3 too. Talking without using the talk button results in the voices coming through the speakers rather than your headset. To team talk through your headsets you must press and hold up on the d-pad whilst talking. This isn't a huge issue but there where some people complaining about this when I was playing. One annoyance is that you can't really team talk and move at the same time- it's not a good idea to stay still for too long in this game! Maybe a toggle on/off talk button would be preferred, or not even a talk button at all- where you just team talk all the time through the headsets.
So there you have it! If there's any questions I haven't answered then let me know and I'll do my best to try and answer it. Halo 3 is shaping up to be everything we expected and more- I personally can't wait for September 26th.

I'll prepare to duck for cover after this post, but I don't really see what the big fuss is all about.
I had a go at the beta and thought it was nothing special - not bad - but nothing special. I'd have thought that if the demo had different characters (non Halo) and a different name, people wouldn't be going so crazy for it. The fact that it is a Halo game makes people give the demo more credit than I think it deserves.
Also, you can't tell me that the graphics are real next gen. Compare this to GoW's graphics for a start. I know it's a beta, but I'd imagine the graphics won't get much better.
So just try to imagine this beta as a non Halo one. Would people rave about it so much then?
(nice write up's by the way)
I'll get my coat and whistle for that taxi now!
Yes I am telling you those graphics are next [Ed-Current] gen. Could you achieve anything close on the original Xbox? No I think not. I quote my mate Chris Clarke's post 'there's only so far you can go graphically with a bunch of guys running around in Spartan suits.' It's the environments that shine in this game more than anything. Also improved textures, details, sound, and a radical new physics engine just make the game look and sound great.
As for Gears of War- the game is smaller scale than Halo 3 is- Gears of War does in some ways look better but- the characters for example offer themselves up for more graphical potential than a Spartan dude does. Halo 3 also has a lot more going on, and a huge physics engine pumping away. There's also destructable scenery. There are many reasons why, on the surface, GOW may look better- however do not be fooled so easily.
Some people expected too much graphically I think, and that's why they have said things like 'omgzzz it's teh Halo 2.'
I for one don't love it just because it' a Halo game. The original was great, and you couldn't say 'people like it just because it's Halo' back then as it was the first in the series. Well Halo 2 improved on the first, and Halo 3 is shaping up to improve on Halo 2.
I can understand some people not liking Halo 3- but you're not a true FPS gamer if you can't realise and appreciate Halo as one of the best and most well made first person shooters out there.
Now mate- get back on PSU! Lol! :)
So you'd say that the graphics are really pushing the 360 then?
It's not just the graphics though (as you may know PSU is hardly a powerhouse), I just don't subscribe to the hype surrounding Halo 3. It seems to me to be an above average FPS at the moment, and certainly not the best I've ever seen. Hopefully the single player game will grab me more, but as for now, I've taken Crackdown back and deleted the near 1gb data.
Yes the graphics are pushing the 360. Of course they are. I'm not saying it's the most graphically amazing game I've ever seen, but then again- what is? It depends on so many factors when you compare two games. Take GOW and Halo 3. I will admit that I wasn't as instantly amazed by Halo 3 as I was GOW- HOWEVER, while on the surface GOW may seem to look better, Halo 3 beats GOW in other things such as size and scope or the physics such as blowing grass, or the way bodies float in water- this also adds to the overall look of the game.
What I'm trying to say is- it just depends on how the developers decide to allocate power in a given game. Bungie also have said themselves they could have put a bunch of cover up effects and such like in the MP- but they didn't want to fiddle with that sort of thing in MP. Bungie also don't like using CGI for their cutscenes, opting instead to use the in-game engine.
Let me also just put it this way- which is looks wise, teh winner? Game A or Game B. Game A has smaller scope than Game B and doesn't have destructable environments. It's beauty can't be denied however. Game B has much larger scope than Game A and destructable environments. However it's beauty is slighty lesser.
You could also use this- say you had a video game version of a garden. There's the most beautiful little carrot patch and a few highly detailed pot plants, also there's a nice litle rose bush. This is garden A and belongs to a dude called Mr A.
In garden B we also have a carrot patch but doesn't look as detailed as Mr A's garden does. However Mr B does have 2 rose bushes, and 5 pot plants..oh but he has just stupidly tripped over and broke 3 of them- he now only has 2. Not to worry- he's going to go and water his other plants in his green house.
As a garden, which looks better?
Have I made my point? Sorry about the daftness! Lol! :)
Lol, nice analogy.
As long as Blockbuster has got a copy of Crackdown in tomorrow when my mum goes in, i SHOULD hopefully be joining you in the Beta for the following 48 hours :)
Glad you like the analogy lol!
Yeah- providing you manage to get a copy of CACKdown, we'll make a party and own all who dare to cross our assault rifles! :)
Lol - How about this? Girl A (GoW) is stunning looking, absolutely gorgeous. She's a bit shallow though and doesn't have the best personality in the world. Her hobbies include clothes and make up shopping. She's a bit shallow.
Girl B (Halo 3) is nice looking girl, very pleasant on the eye. She's a grade A student who's hobbies include, playing the piano, playing chess and helping out at a local charity. She's got many strings to her bow.
We asked 100 people (Vernon Kay style) on face value who they'd choose to date. Over 90% said girl A. It turns out that despite her many faucets, people just find her more attractive than girl B.
You've turned me into a loon now!
Lol! Sorry though, in serious terms, I'm not too convinced by that. When it comes to games- people don't just want pretty graphics- that want a gameplay experience too. A game can look as good as it wants, but if it plays badly then it's all for nothing. Gameplay > graphics.
Unfortunately, rental copies of Cackdown don't feature the Halo 3 Beta, apparently there have been lots of disgruntled renters over the past few days that have taken the copy back ASAP, lol. Ah well, guess i'll have to wait until September to get my Halo 3 fix.
Really? That really sucks! Couldn't you just buy it (at about £30) and then sell it afterwards. If you put it on Ebay or sold it at a CEX store- you'd get atleast £20 back for it. It's not too bad, that's what I'm doing. Ebay all the way baby...lol!
Nah, I haven't actually GOT £30, lol. I just bought the very Limited Edition 'Rocky' boxset for £40, and now i'm skint. I'd rather have that than the Halo 3 Beta though tbh.
Yeah I get ya mate. It is just a beta after all. So what soon-ish games are you looking forward to on 360? Personally I hope Shadowrun and The Darkness turn out to be awesome and get me through the summer drought! Shadowrun should be good and I want a new online title to play!
Definitely getting 'The Darkness', and the other main one i can think of is 'Bioshock' which imo looks awesome :)
Other than that, i think it will be down to Dead Rising to keep me occupied over summer...as well as my good friend alcohol! lol.
Doesn't Bioshock come out at the end of September though?
Actually- Bioshock is currently down for a August 24th release. I'm looking forward to Bioshock too. Here' my list of 360 titles for summer, which could change depending how good they turn out-
Shadowrun
Hour of Victory
The Darkness
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Oh yeah, i forgot about Mass Effect, that looks pretty good too.
