Wow. I'm impressed. I think it's safe to say that the Playstation 3 sales exceeded expectations for it's opening weekend on sale in the UK- selling a whopping 165,000 units, making it the fastest ever selling console in the UK. However what I will say, which is something most sites reporting this are quick to forget, is that the Xbox 360 especially and the Nintendo Wii launched on a worldwide scale, with far less consoles available, and therefore failing to meet demand- with the Xbox 360 shifting 70,000 units, and the Wii selling 105,000 units in their respective launch weekends. It is probable that if either the 360 or Wii had launched in the UK with 220,000 units, as the PS3 did, then most of those would have been sold. With the Playstation 3 not completely selling out, availability is good- which is quite refreshing knowing how difficult it was for people to obtain the Xbox 360, and how difficult it still is to pick up a Wii.The Playstation 3 also managed to achieve 3 top ten exclusive games in the UK with Resistance: Fall of Man at number 1, Motorstorm at number 2, and Formula 1: Championship Edition at number 7.
Great news for gamers really. We should want all three consoles to do well- competition is good for the industry, and for us because we get to own 3 kick ass consoles rather than just one.
