News: Gears of War- The movie

Gears of War is coming to the big screen! New line have snapped up the rights to Epic Games' erm...epic! Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce the film, which will be written by Stuart Beattie- most commonly known for the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer of the game and known as 'CliffyB', will also be executive producer. CliffyB has said himself in past interviews, that were a GOW movie to be made, he would like Clive Owen to star as Marcus Fenix. Good choice if you ask me- Clive Owen is one of my personal favourite actors. He's got the attitude, but is he 'hard' and rough enough? Once the script is completed, Bowen and Godfrey will start looking for a director. The aim is currently for a Summer 2009 release. In a word- awesome!

God, why?!? Just why!?!?

There is no way that a big name actor like Clive Owen would go near a video game adaptation, so i wouldn't get your hopes up for that.

ALL video game movies are TERRIBLE, Silent Hill is just about acceptable, but even that is a rubbish 'film'. They should leave games as games and not make crappy films out of them, the same goes for movies, leave them as movies, don't make crap games out of them! The only exception to that was Riddick.

I can't get excited about a GoW film, the story wasn't strong enough in the first place imo. And as a film critic, i'm saddened by this news.

Sorry to burst your bubble of excitement there, lol.

PS: Maybe they'll fully explain how the bomb got on the train xD

Yeah- many video game adaptations are awful- but lets not just assume that the Gears movie will also suck. Epic would want them to make a good job of it. We'll see I suppose. The GOW story was and is there, it just wasn't told in a particularly strong manner- but that doesn't mean that the film's story will also lack depth.

If i remember correctly, the creators of Doom were very involved in the writing of that movie, and look how that turned out...(if you haven't seen it, it's absolutely pathetic)

Just because someone who made the game is involved in the film doesn't mean it will be good, after all, graphics design developers aren't scriptwriters.

PS: I just saw '300'! Good film, weak story and paper thin characters but the action scenes were brilliant and it looks gorgeous too with those CGI backgrounds :)

Yeah I'm just off to see 300 right now- lol! It looks awesome! :)

Just got back. Great film! I see what you mean about the story- it is there though, it just doesn't stray too far from history. The battle scenes are awesome- they're like works of art. Definately picking it up when it's released on DVD.

The Spartans should definitely have worn more clothes though! lol.

I loved that battle scene were those two Spartans were almost dancing around each other while stabbing Persians, very stylish :)

"TONIGHT!! WE DINE!! IN HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Hehe.

Oh yes, kind of back on topic (lol), but i just noticed that the GoW film will be produced by the same idiots that produced Eragon (absolute shit!) and Alien Vs Predator (Awful, awful film, i'll never forgive them for simultaneously destroying two of my favourite film franchises). This doesn't exactly bode well for the GoW film...

It's perhaps not that bad though- it is going to be written by the same guys as Pirates of the Caribbean. I guess we'll have to see- it's got the potential to be a great movie if they make a good job of it. I was excited at first with the news of a GOW movie- which like I said, has the potential to be good- but obviously when we look at other past video game adaptations and such- it could make us think that GOW may turn out the same.
