News: Xbox Live Expands!

Microsoft have revealed the new Xbox Live Video Marketplace, the new download service for movies/music videos/tv shows etc. From late November gamers in the US can download video content in exchange for Microsoft points, with over 100 pieces of content before the year is out. The movie system will work much like a rental system. You will download the movie of your choice to the HDD, you will then be given 14 days to start watching- after which you have 24 hours until the movie is 'returned.' Music video's and other premium content will be yours after a single purchase.

This is the start of something good, downloading movies is a great idea. However one thing that concerns me is that surely a bigger HDD will be required? SD and HD movies will be available to download, with the HD movies weighing in at around the 4.5 GB mark. A new HD, possibly a 60 GB one would surely open up so much more opportunity. It must be a matter of time until MS make the decision.

I would also think it is a matter of time until a Music Marketplace is announced. MS are set to release their new Zune mp3 player at the end of this year in the US, and eventually elsewhere, so I wouldn't be surprised to see that fully integrated into the system. Downloadable music is surely a must?

Video Marketplace will release in the UK and elsewhere at a so far unannounced date.

Hmmm. The only reason i'd download a movie was if it was cheaper than a movie store price, which it probably won't be.

Downloading TV shows would be good. Especially if you could get content from the USA. Watch new episodes of The Soprano's or Lost, that kind of thing.

My hard drive is already fuller than Rik Waller at a free pie eating contest. I certainly would buy a bigger hard drive just for this.

Lol!
Yeah I'm with you about the downloading movies thing- although remember you caan't currently rent HD movies and you would need the HD player- so say 400 MSP for a movie might not be that bad afterall.
They really need to release a bigger HDD- 60GB minimum.

Good point. I forgot about the HD angle. If you download a trailer through XBL in the 720p format, it takes quite a lot of space. Just imagine how much a 2 hour movie would devour? How long would it take to download too?

In my first comment I missed out a 'n' and a 't' off a word. I meant to say that I certainly 'wouldn't' buy bigger HDD.

To be honest I think that ALL 360 consoles should have had a HDD from the off. 20GB for core, 60GB+ for premium. A HDD is essential for next gen content.
