Gears of War: Updated Impressions

Having now completed the game on a first playthrough, there are a few further points I would like to add to those already mentioned below- and yes, it's not perfect. Here we go:

+ Reveals there will be Gears of War 2
+ Online mode plays great

- A little on the short side
- Story gets to a point where it makes absolutely no sense and leaves huge gaps in the storyline
- A.I on team-mates can be a little frustrating at times, can be overly gun-ho
- Difficulty could do with a slight tweak
- The ending boss is a cvnt

I need to try out co-op play and more versus mode before the full review, so check back soon for that.

Oh and one more thing, Gears is the 3rd fastest selling (opening weekend) game so far for 2006- behind Fifa 07 and PES6 and the fastest seller on Xbox 360 to date. So basically, it's the fastest selling exclusive game of 2006. Gears of War has obviously entered the chart this week, straight in at number 1 in the all formats chart. It has also overtaken Halo 2 at the top of the most played Xbox Live games chart- the first time Halo 2 hasn't been top since it's release.

It's good, but not the killer title we all wanted. I think it's probably fair to rate this title a 9/10.

Has to be said though that the graphics are outstanding, especially via a HDTV.

I definately wouldn't buy a Xbox 360 to play this game. The poor story line spoils an otherwise great game.
I think the game uses it's visuals a little too much. They are superb on a HDTV, probably the best I've seen- and the gameplay is very fun but it just feels like a load of random shooting due to the fact that there is no explanation for almost anything in the game.
If you can look past the visuals, I think it is quite a disappointing game and isn't a killer app at all; more a gloryfied tech demo.
