Feature: What the cell is going on?
I thought I'd raise your attention to a rather interesting feature article by 1up. The article talks about and compares the differences (or apparent lack of) in graphics between Microsoft's Xbox 360, and Sony's Playstation 3.
When Sony announced it's next generation console, with it's Blue Ray, it's Cell processor, and it's RSX graphics chip, they reckoned that the next generaion would start only when the PS3 launched. Well these comparisons seem to suggest otherwise, and the current general opinion amongst gamers is that the PS3 games look no better or perform any smoother than they do on a 360, or in some cases- worse. Well it seems that the next generation was here all along.
What do you think? I'll be interested to hear your opinions on this. Is the PS3 as powerful as Sony have led some to believe, suffering only from the launch day mediocrity that all consoles go through- or have Sony being making it all up?

I just flicked through it, looking at some of the HD comparison video's, i think Fight Night Round 3 is the most significantly better looking game on PS3, it seems more crisp and there is more detail on the characters. On the Tiger Woods game the grass seemed slightly more detailed, but apart from that the rest looks about the same, if not worse on the PS3 (most noticable with NFS...it is EA though, lol). We've got to remember though, that these ARE launch titles and are not using the machine to it's full ability, just as most of the 360 games last year looked like last gen ports but 'shinier', now look at Gears of War's graphics one year later, it's a far cry from the crappy quality of the Tony Hawks American Wasteland port is it.
The PS3 is not worth the asking price...YET, maybe next Christmas when it has built up a stronger library of games and MGS4 is out, THEN it might be better value for money, but as it stands right now it doesn't have much of an advantage over the 360. Don't get me wrong, next Christmas when MGS4 and GTAIV are out i'm totally getting a PS3 (i prefer the Playstation control scheme for GTA, and it's still going to get exclusive episodes, they'll just be different to the 360's according to Rockstar). I know you don't really love MGS, but i do, and i really would pay £425 for it! lol. Seriously.
Next year will be a damn good Christmas for me: PS3, MGS4, GTAIV and Halo 3, yummmy :)
I agree, launch titles never really take full advantage of a system's power- although I don't think the PS3 has much of a power advantage over 360- some things the PS3 does do better, whereas other things the 360 can do better. Apparently the 360 has a better GPU, and is much easier to develop for.
I do like MGS a lot, but I wouldn't pay £450 to play it. I'll probably get a PS3 at launch, but mainly for knowing what games will be coming out later rather than for the launch games.
With regards to the control system on GTA being better on the PS3, well that advantage has gone now thanks to the fact that the 360 controller now has shoulder buttons.
I don't think we'll really know the graphical difference until well into 2007 when developers have had a chance to show us what they can do.
As for me, well I certainly won't be getting a PS3. Don't get me wrong, I'd like one, but I refuse to pay that much for a console. I'd much rather invest in a Wii.
Good points. I am perfectly fine with paying £300 or so for a PS3, but what about the other £150?
I currently see it as a £150 blueray gamble. If blueray succeeds, it's all well and good- but if it doesn't...
However Sony's trackrecord with new media is not so good:
BetaMax= FAILED
Minidisk= FAILED
UMD movies= FAILING
Blueray= PLACE YOUR PREDICTIONS HERE
Personally, i think (& hope, considering i've got tonnes of DVD's) that both HD-DVD and Blue Ray fail miserably, i don't want to have to shell out for yet another version of 'Aliens: Special Edition' just so i can see the wires holding the alien's up in HD.
And as for the Wii...well, lets just say that i'm not a fanboy, but i'd rather spend my hard earned money on something that ISN'T a gimmick. The games i've seen for it so far all seem like gimmicks and nothing more, Red Steel doesn't look all that good (GameSpot gave it 5.5/10...) and the Wii features of Zelda really are just tacked on to make it a selling point for the Wii. Until i see a game that fully utilizes the Wii control scheme to it's full potential, i'm going to keep calling it a gimmick. I expect the Wii to go the same way as the GameCube, strong initial sales at launch, but then dwindling profits as the year goes on.
As with re-buying your collection- it's not about that. You would buy NEW releases in HD. Atm I don't really mind who wins, but I would guess at HD-DVD coming off better.
I can see the Wii going one of two ways. Either a massive success, or like the Gamecube- a huge disappointment.
It's ok having the exclusive games on the Wii (Zelda, Metroid etc are all great) but what about multiformat? I can't exactly imagine a Wii version of some upcoming games. Not only will some games 'not work' on Wii with the controls and that- but the power of the system is nowhere near that of PS3 and Xbox 360.
I can see it suffering from a 3rd party point of view (like N64 and GC) but will the 1st party games and the exclusive 3rd party titles be enough? It needs a more steady flow of games than GC ever did...and I will need to play the console for myself before deciding if I like the Wii or not. It's the controls that concern me- will they work, or will they be too fiddly? I do love the idea of backwards compatability with the GC though, and a downloadable back catalogue.
The control system maybe a gimmick or may turn out to be genius. I seem to remember that the N64 controller was before its time. The DS touchscreen is also a massive success.
I don't suppose we'll know until we've had a good play on one. I've always liked the Cube and I look forward to playing Resident Evil 4 and Wind Waker in 480p. I'm currently buying up rarer Cube titles before prices hit the roof when people discover its backward compatability.
I'm also looking forward to downloading super-rare titles of old from the SNES and N64 library. I missed a lot of good games that nowadays would cost you £40-£50 each on eBay (Paper Mario - Final Fantasy etc).
Just realised that I won't be able to play many Cube games in 480p. It turns out that very few were actually made in 480p. The only one I'm sure that does is Battalion Wars.
