Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas: Preview

Rainbow Six: Vegas is the fifth game in the series and after the disappointment of Rainbow Six: Lockdown, you'll be pleased to hear that Ubisoft have taken the game back to it's tactical roots. Let's start with what's new. The game is built for the next generation, using the Unreal 3 engine and looks amazing. It all shows incredible detail and great smoke/explosive effects.

Using the Xbox 360's power, the scenery is much more interactive than ever before, falling platforms, exploding doors, giant crashing bells (play the demo and see for yourself.) Another improvement is the actual level design. Gone are the linear pathways to reach your objectives- now you have a choice, be it climing down a ladder or rappelling over the side- you decide which way your team take on the terrorist threat.

Control's have also seen great improvement. Most notably is the new cover system. Now, you press and hold the L trigger to take cover behind whatever it is you are next to. It works really well and feels natural and fluid- it gives the game a very tactical 'stop and pop' feel.

Enemy A.I is vastly improved, no longer is it a case of taking cover and waiting for them to show themselves. They will now try to flank you, suppress you, and work together to out think you.

The health system has changed from the standard health bar of the past Rainbow games, and has been replaced by the increasingly popular regenative health. If you're taking hits, the screen turns blurry and red indicating you're close to death and that you need to take cover to regenerate your health. It fits well with the gameplay and was a good decision by Ubisoft.

On the downside, there was occasional slowdown at particular points during the demo- however very slight and nothing to be concerned about.

The game is shaping up really well and is looking like a must buy when it's released at the end of November. Team Rainbow are back to their very best.

I have one question for you Mr Lloyd, should i get R6:Vegas or Call of Duty 3? I'll probably be able to save up enough money between now and Christmas to buy one of them, so which wouldst thou recommend?

Whether Vegas runs in 50hz will also be an important buying point for me too :)

A very good question squire.
It's also an incredibly tough one. I have played R6 vegas singleplayer and it plays really well, as said in the preview. Multiplayer also looks awesome- I haven't yet played it but from in game videos it looks amazing.
As for COD3, I haven't played it yet- but it will be fantastic if it's anything like COD2. I also hear the multiplayer is supposed to be something else and it runs upto 24 players online.
What I would say is wait for my impressions to be posted on here of COD3, I will post some on the day of release which is Nov 10th.
Obviously it is a matter of which you get first, but I would say that both will be definately worth picking up.

Yeah, i intend to get them both eventually, but at £40 a pop i want to get the best one first. I'll wait for your impressions before deciding on which to get. Although i suppose Gears will be totally owning my Christmas holiday this year, so any other games can wait, lol.
